You rarely pay the advertised price
Sites like Wix have prices that seem super-lowThese entry-level prices will get you in the door, but there are additional costs for e-commerce, for your own web domain, for proper analytics, and removing platform branding. Do you homework beforehand, figure out what features you will use, and compare the costs between platforms.
Your website rarely looks unique
With thousands of people using the same template, you may see other websites with similar colour scheme, fonts, stock photos & clip art. You need to take the time to customize the template to make it unique for your business’s website.
Website speed may drop as you add features
The core functionality of the website is fast with the website builders, but the website will slow with higher resolution graphics and video, and as pages become more complex, combining many elements. Making your website pages like Facebook–with an endless scroll–has a performance downside.
Support you get can vary
While the website builder platforms promise 24/7 support, some have call centres with humans, some are chatbot or online chat interface only. Some chat interfaces are either slow or very procedural, making getting the answer you seek feel painful.
It’s a challenge to change platforms
You have be careful and methodical when leaving WIX or SquareSpace: They have a website export feature, but it’s rarely 100%. You may have the text and image exported, but the look & feels needs to be rebuilt on the new platform (their proprietary templates stay with them). Rebuild the website on the new platform and visually compare each page to see what is (or may be) missing, or have a different look than before. You may need to find equivalent widgets of plugins to et the same (or better) functionality. Also keep in mind, stock imagery used from a website builder may not let you transfer the licence when not using that website builder. You may need to find and re-licence images/photography.
